Brad Pitt was born in Oklahoma in 1963. He is of English , Irish , Scottish , Swedish , Dutch , and German ancestry [ 1 ] and grew up with two younger siblings in Springfield, Missouri . His father, William Alvin Pitt, was a trucking company manager, and his mother, Jane Etta Hillhouse, was a school counselor. Both are devout Baptists .

Pitt first came to the attention of the film industry in 1991 when he played Geena Davis 's young lover in the film Thelma & Louise . In 1992, he starred alongside Kim Basinger and Gabriel Byrne as Detective Frank Harris in Cool World , a combination of live-action and animated films . Robert Redford then cast him in his film A River Runs Through It (1992), and he played a ruthless serial killer in the thriller Kalifornia (1993). In the film True Romance (1993), his first collaboration with Quentin Tarantino , who wrote the screenplay for the film, he played the small supporting role of Floyd.

Pitt's international breakthrough as an actor came alongside Tom Cruise in the film adaptation of the novel Interview with the Vampire (1994). He became a teen idol with the drama Legends of the Fall (1994). He soon attempted to escape this image by portraying a police officer in a highly stressful psychological case in controversial films such as Seven (1995) and a mentally ill patient in 12 Monkeys (1995). For his role as Jeffrey Goines in 12 Monkeys, he received a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and an Oscar nomination.
